The Cassette Mailing List program (26-1503) is a versatile and useful tool, an inexpensive program that most tape-driven TRS-80 Model III owners will use frequently. Also, the Line Printer VIII can print a number of varied type styles. The 10 CPI Ordinary Normal style that the Mailing List program yields is not as large or quickly legible as might be desired on a mailing label. Therefore, in line 19000 below, I have selected the 8.3 Condensed Elongated type style. (Depending on your printer and the type face you wish, you may omit or vary the Hex and Dec instructions to the printer in line 19000.)
We have developed a new program library of excellent quality and worth over 100 at retail value. Further details of the programs contained in our new software library will be published shortly.

If you prefer that your name be deleted from such a list, please fill out the coupon below or affix a copy of your mailing label and mail it to Please delete my name from mailing lists sent to other companies or organizations.

Another type of information data base is set up for a specific type of business pur pose. There is an unlimited array of data base designs which can be accessed with a TRS-80 microcomputer. The reason for setting up and accessing a business data base is twofold. First, it allows the Host computer to off-load small, local jobs to the microcomputer, and, second, it allows the microcomputer to take advantage of expanded memory capabilities on the host. For example, the microcomputer could do jobs such as accounts payable and accounts receivable for the local office or a mailing list for local customers. Plus, the...
The program MAIL allows me to print mailing address labels for up to 105 names and addresses. Before loading or entering MAIL, type PCLEAR 1 or POKE 25, 6 NEW to ensure sufficient memory. Basically MAIL is an expansion of the Inventory Shopping List (ISL) program on page 295 of the Color BASIC Manual. Also, several finer features of MAIL were inspired by previous newsletters. I'm still refining MAIL, but I have used this version to print address labels for our Christmas card list and several non-profit club's mailing lists. The equipment and supplies I use to run MAIL are

Then, I happened upon a small organization that was paying someone else to update and run off their mailing list as well as send out a little newspaper once a month. When I found out they were shelling out enough in a single year to completely pay for a 16K Model III, my wheels started smoking. When the smoke cleared two weeks later, the computer had arrived. A few days after that came the printer then the Radio Shack tape-based mailing list program and Scripsit I sneaked down into the basement with the real reason for my foray into modern-day high technology. My wife barely saw me for Weeks. Well, I got it all working in a matter of hours and hurriedly typed in the thousand-name mailing list. (That's hurriedly in two, 22-hour marathons with some help from my wife who kept shaking her head in disbelief.) That done, I spent the next three months wrestling with The Thing. Surely, I'd weep (bleary-eyed at 3 a.m.), surely The Thing can do a better job than this. And The Thing had to be...

We're often asked how, exactly, one merges PROFILE files with SCRIPSIT to create letters to one's accounts or mailing list. The merge process is remarkably simple, since PROFILE II, 11+ (also called PROFILE+ ) and III + all have built-in merge creation operations. These operations each build up to 5 special merge files compatible with SCRIPSIT, indicated in the directory by the extensions SR1, SR2, SR3, SR4 and SR5. Your merge document, therefore, will be FILENAME SRT (or SR2, et cetera).
CASSETTE MAILING LIST (26-1503) An insertion should be made in the Cassette Mailing List Manual on page 5, near the bottom of the page after the SHIFT D TO DELETE NAME paragraph and before the C TO CHANGE A FIELD. The insertion should read If you are using a Model III, you must hold down the shift key and press 0, then press D. When you have finished deleting names, you must hold down the shift key and press 0 before you can use the other options. MAILING LIST II (26-4507 VERSION 2.0) Mailing List II produces a phantom linefeed on the third set of two-up labels when printing a three line address using the Line Printer II or IV. The following program change to MLS BAS is required for those who will use two-up labels and who are using either the Line Printer II or IV. The change is optional for other users. Line
It took about a minute for Maxi Mail to search through my 55-record mailing list. If you enter a name or zip code incorrectly, you have to wait while the system searches in vain for it. Pressing break stops the program and puts you in Basic's command mode, with nothing but open files and a Break in line XXX message to comfort you. If you change the last name or the zip code of a record, the file insertion routine forces you to wait even longer. I changed the last name of one entry and had to wait over a minute. And the delays get longer as your mailing list grows. You can print labels for your entire mailing list, or only for those records that match certain criteria. If you select the latter option, you must tell Maxi Mail which fields to search, and what to search for. Maxi Mail also prints your mailing list in summary form (column form instead of mailing-label format). You can print a complete record listing (see Fig. 3), or an abbreviated record listing...

Filling out and returning the Software Registration Card sets in motion a vehicle to help you maintain your software in its most current and accurate condition. Pull any Software Registration Cards that may still be in your software package, fill them out, and mail them. This insures that your name, address, and current software version number are included in a mailing list maintained here at Radio Shack. Except on some cards printed early in this program, we pay the postage. Only those names on the list will receive software correction letters, and the best way to get your name on the list is by sending in the completed Software Registration Card. The card should already have the catalog number and version number of the software on it. You just fill in your name and address. When the cards are received by us, the version and catalog numbers of the package are entered under the owner's name into a master mailing list that is maintained in our data processing department. Card, you will...

It had two modes of operation, either computing or not computing. When it decided not to compute the error had to be tracked down, some punched cards put in, to fix the bug, and the program started over. It was super fast of course. Updating our Belgium mailing list took only 60 non-stop hours (remember Belgium is a very small country). This up-to-the-minute product came from Big Blue and was later replaced with a modern on-line mini system from another large computer company. You can guess how this background had me totally unprepared for a personal computer. While on the subject of improvements, I have implemented a major new policy for software support. On January 1 we started using a new computer mailing list for the purpose of software support. Our policy for all disk, non-game software, will be to inform you by first class letter of all patches and re* releases. While the Newsletter and Computer Customer Services will still produce information on software updates, we intend to...
Just type in your letter continuously as you would with a typewriter and make corrections with almost unlimited use of the backspace key. What you see on the screen is exactly what you get in the printout . Then print the letters using your mailing list. You will be able to select continuous printing or cut sheet, paging, tabing, test printing, and optional printing on envelopes._

Labels are also easy to print using a common form with Xs where the information goes. You could even set up a mailing list with a base document having the merge variables positioned correctly and another document with the names. You can't sort or select any specific information, but if you only need to print the labels then this procedure will work well. If you need to add information to the merge document, add the information, convert the merge file and then print the labels using the label base document and the Scripsit merge utility.

I have read the editorial twice and still do not understand why you abandoned your micro for your mailing list work. Why do you not publish your cost figures to prove that the IBM 370 route is the way to go Are you sure that you just did You said you do not run a second shift and could not run a 15 hour label print out Why do you have to print the labels in one day You only print them once a month Why not initialize your mailing list program twice, once with A-M and once with N-Z Or if this has problems, why not use two microcomputers side-by-side I do it all the time. One is in Electric Pencil and one is in BASIC, so I can get information from one for the other without having to have disk waits and rebooting, etc. It beats two time share terminals as regards speed and versatility and personalized programs. (Data processing really hates to have me mucking around in the programming mode when the mini is opening and closing files like crazy ) Although we expect the micros will continue...
After my wife Kathy had installed her Model II, I knew I just had to have the Model III so I started looking for a printer. Checking out all the different ones on the market was a chore. None seemed to be just what I wanted. Maybe being spoiled by Kathy's Daisy Wheel II did it. The only solution was to purchase the LP VII and wait to see what would be on the market later that I could be happy with. With Scripsit, Mailing List and VisiCalc, the limitations of the LP VII became apparent as the days passed by.
Essentially, what makes up a bulletin board system is the computer (of course), disk drives, and a printer on which is stored various information about each caller. The information which each BBS stores on paper (called HARD COPY) also depends on the sysop. (You'll find that almost every aspect of every BBS depends on what each particular sysop wishes to do). Some keep records only of the names of each caller, some keep caller addresses for mailing list purposes, and so on.

Dow Jones Information Services would like to extend its best wishes for the New Year to all the TRS-80 Microcomputer News readers. Traditionally, this is a time for New Year's resolutions, and we at Dow Jones would like to express to you our ongoing resolve to expand our service to provide quality information which is useful and of interest to our subscribers. We also received a New Year's greeting from Madge Midway. You might recall her first article from October's issue on being a new subsciber. She sent us a letter this month on our Free Text Search data base. One of the features of the TRS-80 Videotex software that enables our Radio Shack subscribers to use this data base is that the software does not divide words in the middle, thus every line is easily readable, even though Free Text Search is an 80 column wide data base. With that brief introduction, here is Madge. I am writing to you hoping you might publish this letter as you did my last, because I have made a recent...

Investigators at the United Parcel Service are probing complaints that a San Antonio, TX, man attempted to rip off Compuserve subscribers by getting them to respond to an electronic bulletin board notice advertising name-brand computer hardware at cut rate prices. Since he has been spreading the word on the apparent rip-off, his phone has been ringing off the hook, said Maskell, whose Compuserve ID number is 70505,1123. He claimed the alleged scam could victimize as many as 10 percent of Compuserve's 23,000 subscribers. But Gard said, To my knowledge, I know of less than five complaints about Bauer. And a sampling by 80 Micro of other San Antonio shipping outlets the U.S. Post Office, Emory Express and Federal Express unearthed no complaints connected to David Bauer.
Please note that this program is for TRS-80 Level 1 and will not run on Level 2 machines or the System-80. First of all, please don't expect an immediate reply by return mail. We have several hundred subscribers who regularly submit programs and it takes a while to go through them. The length of time that it takes me to reply varies, depending on the quantity of incoming mail, but I usually try to return a reply in under a month. (3) Will it appeal to enough of our subscribers
Whilst sweeping away all the old cobwebs we have decided to make a further change. All of our readers are well aware that the date shown on the cover is about six months behind the actual date of issue. This is a legacy of our earlier days of more limited resources and, try as we will, we have not been able to catch up without sacrificing quality. What we have been able to do is to hold our own and produce a magazine each month for the past three issues. Well, you had better dig out those calendars that came with the July issue because we have decided to put aside our pride and to change the cover date so that the magazine you receive will carry the actual date of issue. We must allow time for two printing processes, since we print the magazine in the United Kingdom after we print it in Australia. Therefore, the very next issue of MICR0-80 magazine will carry a cover date of JULY 1983. It will still be volume 3, issue 12 however and all our subscribers will receive the number of...

TODAY is a color magazine which gives our customers a more in-depth view of our services, new products, CompuServe Information Providers, customers and what they think of the service and special announcements and information.
After some negotiation in November and December 1979, 80-U.S. has agreed to fulfill the obligations of T-Pal with the Journal. Letters have been sent to T-Pal subscribers, giving them the option of continuing with 80-U.S. or recieving a refund. Those already taking both were given the option of an extention to their 80-U.S. subscription.
A pair of Radio Shack 64K Model II's and Radio Shack's 8-line telephone multiplexer will be used by The Advertiser-Tribune to make the electronic edition available to home subscribers. The electronic edition of the newspaper will be formatted for use with either the Radio Shack Videotex Terminal or the Radio Shack Color Computer.
I have subscribed to 80 Micro from the first issue and am extremely pleased with the magazine's quality and content. However, after receiving the May issue, I felt compelled to write about what seems to be a crusade on the part of Wayne Green, some of his staff and many of my fellow subscribers. I am referring to the continual, unrelenting attacks 80 Micro mounts against Radio Shack's marketing and service policies.

All it takes for you to go online is a modem, an RS-232 interface which is built in to most of our computers, and some Videotex software. The Videotex software includes the sign up information for CompuServe and Dow Jones and a free hour on each to get you started. I hope you don't think all this neat stuff is free While not free, it's not very expensive. And it is popular, with Dow Jones now having about 60,000 subscribers and CompuServe about 36,000.
I've enclosed my company check for a space ad. I look forward to seeing what type of results it gets in Basic Computing. I'm a subscriber myself and pour over every issue. Never before have I found a magazine with more useable information per issue than Basic Computing. My computer and I are very pleased.
There is an initial fee of 100 to become an AUSTRALIAN SOURCE subscriber but founder subscriptions taken out prior to 1st February, 1982 can be had for only 60. Thereafter, users pay 10 per hour in peak time (8 a.m. - 6 p.m.) and 4.50 per hour in off-peak time (6 p.m. - 8 a.m.). MICR0-80 is very excited about the possibilities which this new venture opens to microcomputer owners. We will support the AUSTRALIAN SOURCE will articles explaining how to adapt your equipment to communicate with the SOURCE and membership of the SOURCE is available from our mail order department. In fact, we have reserved a number of charter memberships for our readers and we have also taken the unusual step (for us) of accepting an advertisement in our columns for the AUSTRALIAN SOURCE which gives you further information about this service (see back cover).

Files is designed for Level 2 systems. It allows the user to enter data into a file, to recall this data later and list it to the screen, in a format set out by the user. It is therefore suitable for such functions as a mailing list containing names, addresses and phone numbers or a directory to contain, for instance, magazine articles, date, volume number and type of article, etc. The program is then capable of searching the file for any data asked for by the user and displaying all files to the screen which contain the data asked for.

Word V is very like its brother, but does not require the apostrophe at the beginning of each line when using the optional editor. It includes a file merge option to produce form letters from a mailing list for a personalized touch. Xtra Special Delivery gives mainframe capabilities to form-letter processing on the TRS-80. With it, businessmen can communicate through their mailing lists just like the big boys with codes calling up entire paragraphs suited to their customer. Special Delivery includes two main programs Mailform and Mailrite, both written in machine language. Mailform creates a mailing list in a clear, menu-driven format with controls to manipulate and search records, edit and sort them. Data fields include name, company, address, city, state, zip and two general data areas. Movement from one field to another is easily performed with the cursor keys, and errors may be signaled by a buzzer attached to the cassette port. Mailrite combines a Mailform list with a text file...

SCRIPSIT will ask for the filename of the MERGE file. In this case, it would be the PROFILE select file but could be the MAILING LIST (26-4507) or a data file from a program you have written.

There are Pencil, Scripsit, hundreds of mailing lists, and now here comes another one. But hold on, this package is different. The WORDPROCESSING package has tremendous flexibility. It consists of two major machine language programs called Mailform and Mailrite. Also included are 4 special purpose programs called Extract, Sort, Label, and Convert. With this software you can set up a name and address list, call up a text that you have written either with Pencil or Scripsit and print custom written letters combining the information from both files. There are some drawbacks. You can set up a file of at most 316 names in memory at one time. Very large mailing lists would require subdivision into a number of files. Tire documentation is very weak. In fact, a command is shown on the video (X extract) which is not mentioned in the 16 page manual. I would be afraid to give the manual to a non-programmer. For example, describing the Get Record command 'If the memory buffer is empty or the...
We will refer you to the Profile article elsewhere in this issue of Microcomputer News on how to create a regular merge file with PROFILE to use with SCRIPSIT 2.0. Here we will go over some of the less obvious uses of the Merge utility. Sometimes you may find that a file you have already created is just what you want for a new document except for a couple of items. A file might contain, for example, the first and last names for a mailing list but you don't want titles such as Dr., Mrs., Mr., etc. Using the Convert and Assemble utilities and the advanced editing features of SCRIPSIT 2.0, you can fix that problem. Also, you can combine two files that have the same variable names and the same number of variables in each grouping. This would be a convenient way to combine two mailing lists. To do this, first open a new document and use the Convert utility discussed before to get the file into SCRIPSIT. Answer (A) to the first prompt. The TRSDOS file name you will use when you convert your...

Your TRS-80 has the ability to totally organize mailing lists for these companies It also has the ability to supply them with tabular listings and mailing labels upon request. All it takes is a little bit of your time. Any progressive business would be happy to pay you a nominal fee to keep their lists organized and up to date. What's a nominal fee You can charge 10 cents a name to enter, store and maintain each record in your computer. It's also worth 3 cents to supply this name on a gummed mailing label. Think of it. The label costs three-tenths of a cent going into the printer and. with the value you add. is worth 3 cents when it comes out the other end That s 1000 profit That's a Money Machine
As a lawyer, I use Profile III Plus to sort data in age discrimination cases, for docket control, and for mailing lists. Many of these functions involve the use of dates, often an awkward chore with Profile III Plus since it stores dates with the year first, then the month, then the day (YY MM DD). I've developed a way to sort information without concern for the way Profile III Plus handles them.
This series has been primarily concerned with random access files and techniques. But people with sequential file systems have real concerns as well. The current problem is one that faces many people with mailing lists or other data bases that are maintained as sequential files How do we sort when there are too many items to sort in memory For example, several years ago, a friend was maintaining a 25000-name database on a TRS-80 Model I with five-inch disks Imagine the problem of combining those files into a mailing list sorted by zip code.
Personally, games are not the reason I bought the computer. I tend to use the machine for keeping subscription and mailing lists, running some amateur radio programs that keep my station log, keep count of how many countries I have worked and gotten confirm-tion cards from, finding out what direction it is from my house to any point on Earth (so I keep my antenna pointed in the right direction), etc.
I have solved a practical problem I was having with MICROFILES I have files of information on people. I often want to print their names first-name-first for mailing lists and other purposes. But, if I want to alphabetize the list, I must enter people's names in the stilted last-name-first format. One way around this problem is to have one field for the last name and another field for the first name, middle name, etc.

Maxi Mail provides its own DOS to help your Model III manage a mailing list, but this is a system that requires time and patience. No, Maxi Mail is not the misspelled name of a new body-building magazine. It's a mailing list management system for the Model III, offered by the business software arm of Adventure International. Maxi Mail is an easy-to-use, well-documented system, but some of its functions take maxi-time. Maxi Mail executes automatically when you press reset. A title page appears while the program loads, and the main menu appears after a few seconds (see Fig. 1). Before you can enter names and addresses, you must initialize a data disk by selecting option 5, Create New Mailing List. This option creates a series of data disk files that hold your mailing list. It also initializes a few data files on the system disk. You have several opportunities to abort the initialization process 5 Create New Mailing List Maxi Mail requires a separate system disk for each of your mailing...
I need to use Scrip-sit with this mailing list. What you want is a program that will read the mailing-list file into a new set of files, each of which is small enough to load into your word processor. The task is fairly simple, but time-consuming while it's working. If the data file is random-access. your program will need to read each name address and send it out to the new file with carriage returns inserted at the proper places so the entry looks like a normal name and address instead of having all the information on one line. The program can also remove any of the mailing-list auxiliary information kept with each name address entry (for example, the sorting codes, which you might not want to fool with). If you want a way to merge the mailing list with letters, the task becomes more difficult, and could be impossible to implement depending on the word processor and mailing-list program you're using.

Many of you have asked for a program to create, add to, edit and print labels for your own business, church or club mailing list. Well, now you have it Our Mailing List Systems (yes, there will be two cassette tape and disk versions) allow lists including name, either company name or phone number, address, city, state, zip code, and a special (optional) select code. When your mailing list, inventory or other data file grows beyond reading the complete file into your computer memory, how do you sort the data If you have a TRS-80 with Level II Disk BASIC, you are blessed with the capability of creating and editing large files, but that disk operating system leaves you only about 6K bytes of memory to hold programs and working data.

One of the most powerful attributes of Multi-User Profile is its ability to perform lookups. This means you can access, or look up, fields in up to ten other data bases at the same time. One obvious use of this would be to keep addresses in a mailing list data base or a contributions tracking file or whatever. Why store such information in more than one place Retrieving information in this way lets you transfer it, change it, or simply use it in conditions for other processes. Thus, Multi-User Profile is a relational data base.
For you people who have a small mailing list (max. 26 names) and or you can't believe that Postman is the best package and we must be overstating how well this program runs try our sample package called Mini Postman. It comes as an up and running program and shows you how good our package really is. This package can be upgraded to the full package within 30 days of purchase by calling and saying I want the full package , and paying the difference between the mini and the full package. Note Mini Postman does not include the convert utilities. If not everything you expect, return sample disk for full refund (less shipping). You can't lose.
I attempted to set up a two segment program on drive 0. Segment one was a mailing list. All of segment 2 was to be reserved for a single field. I entered 256 for the field size. The program proceeded to allot zero space for the field. Furthermore, it refused to execute mode 7 (Update, Record Addition). When we redid the program using 255 characters for the field (leaving one space blank) the program ran fine.
